I have fooled with the various settings and options numerous times. I have a lot more images to load, but need to get this figured out first.

The slideshow is working the way I want it (changing size, including title and description) except for these two properties:
Way too big. I want it to fit on the page of, say, a 15" laptop.
Background of title and description to black with some transparency.

I have changed the setting numerous times for scaling, not scaling; auto height; not auto height, etc., and I guess I am just not hitting on the right combination of options.

    Hello,

    You may add style (to your theme custom CSS option, or to style.css file):

    .royalSlider .rsImg {
        max-height: 500px !important;
        width: auto !important;
        margin: 0 auto !important;
    }

    It'll make sure that images height is not larger than 500px (first line), and they're centered (third line).

    You may skip !important part depending on the location of this style.

    Also, if you plan to create many galleries with the same layout, consider overriding default [gallery] once to have the same configuration for all galleries. http://help.dimsemenov.com/kb/wordpress-royalslider-tutorials/wp-cr...

    I tried pasting that into my style.css, but it did not do anything. It may be my theme - I have had trouble with this type of thing before because the theme was created with Artisteer.

    I have created a separate gallery that seems to be working for my purposes except for color. I want the background white, and is there a way to change the title/description area colors?

    Thanks.

    The styling of slider depends on skin option in General section. Ss an alternative you can force any color to caption via CSS, for example:

    .rsGCaption {
       background: #FFF !important;
       color: #222 !important;
    }
