I am trying to use thumbnails to create custom buttons, but haven't figured out a way to do this yet. I need the background image of the button to swap out when you select a different slide and each button has it's own graphic. I'm used to using classes in CSS to do this, but I'm not sure if I'm overlooking something.

Let me know if you need more explanation. Any help is appreciated.

There is appendSpan option that may help you with such styling. http://dimsemenov.com/plugins/royal-slider/documentation/#thumbnails

Can't assist you more with such customization.
